HIGH PERFORMANCE MATERIAL ASSEMBLY FOR INVISIBLE SHIELD FOR VISIBLE SAFETY

Pipe joints are venerable. The mechanical areas like flanges, and valves are bases on pressure and gaskets to control the pressure, heat and corrosion from inside. Since the material has a life, its a question of "when" rather than "if" for its failure.

Spray guards are jacket type covers that protect these areas from outside by providing a second layer. The function of second layer is to prevent spraying of the media when there is a failure, loss of heat from these joints, and corrosion from outside.

Industrial Safety Equipment

WHAT DOES IT PROTECT AGAINST?

Pipe conveyors are essential part of any processing plant and are used to transfer media from one part to other. There are variety of media transfers such has chemicals (acid/ alkali), steam, oil, gas etc.

Pipes are venerable at joints and are the weakest points, susceptible to damage. During failure, media escapes pipes and comes like a spray or jet stream due to pressure inside. This creates a zone of chemical spillage what creates damages in the zone and is hazardous for operator to approach. Sometime, due to such damages, more loss is seen, also leading to chemical fire.

AGAINST SPRAY

The jacket act like a spay protectors, blocks the jet stream from spilling the media in the direction of force vector. It limits the spray to a very local zone and allows the maintenance team to gain access to the repair side.

EARLY DETECTION

With option of clear PTFE and litmus integration, early signs can be picked up dripping, leakage and other kinds of discharge.

AGAINST FLAME CYCLE

Chemical Spray mixed with electrical wiring creates ignition and bursting flames. This has been the major cause of plant fire and lead to huge losses.

HAZARDOUS AREA ZONING (ATEX)

Many companies use safety shields as a part of thier case to reduce zoned areas.

INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

As a necessary risk mutation measure mentioned in most of the standard, industrial insurers now focus specifically on spray-out and oil mist prevention and other insist on safety shielding.

WHERE ARE THESE GUARDS INSTALLED?

Several industry regulations and standards mandate or recommend the use of safety shielding and flange guards to prevent
hazardous spray-outs, protect personnel, and maintain equipment integrity. Notable among these are:

1. Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) 29 CFR 1910.212: Safety Shielding

This U.S. regulation requires that machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards. While primarily focused on machine guarding, it encompasses protective shields and barriers, which can include flange guards to prevent exposure to hazardous leaks.

2. Energy Institute (EI) Publication

Specifically addressing the oil and gas industry, E115 highlights the risk of flammable atmospheres due to leaks and recommends the use of porous spray guards around flanges and potential leak points. These guards cause leaking material to coalesce back into a liquid, reducing hazardous conditions.

3. Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS): Marine & Shipboard
    Firesafety

In the marine industry, SOLAS regulations mandate shielding or screening of oil spray within vessel engine rooms to prevent fires and explosions resulting from oil leaks.

4. Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres
Regulations: Safe Practices in the Petroleum Industry

Applicable in Europe, DSEAR requires employers to assess and eliminate or reduce risks from dangerous substances. Safety shields are recommended as a control measure to prevent spray and mist, thereby aiding in hazardous area zoning and compliance.

5. American Petroleum Institute (API)

API provides guidelines on safe practices in the petroleum industry, including recommendations for the use of protective devices like flange guards to prevent hazardous releases.

6. ATEX (Atmosphères Explosibles, Europe) – Explosive
    Atmosphere Safety

There are a variety of other reasons to fit shelf, including pollution control, general site cleanliness, and protection of nearby electrical equipment.

7. ISO Guidelines

• ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management: Ensures that Spray Guards are manufactured with consistent quality, traceability, and performance through a risk-based, process-driven approach.

• ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management: Supports leak prevention and chemical containment to minimise environmental impact and align with sustainable industrial practices.

• ISO 45001:2018 – Occupational Health & Safety: Enhances workplace safety by reducing the risk of spray-out incidents, thereby protecting personnel from hazardous fluid exposure.

8. American Petroleum Institute 570: Piping Inspection
    Code

Reinforces the need for protective measures like Spray Guards to control leaks and spray-outs identified during piping systems inspections and risk assessments.

9. Others

Other local/ state/ country /industry norms pertaining to quality, safety and environment protection.
